How to Choose a Diamond Ring

Fancy Color Diamond or Colorless Diamond — The First Decision

The first and most important decision when choosing a diamond ring is whether you want a fancy color diamond or a colorless one. GIA/CGL graded Colorless diamonds — graded D through J~ — are the traditional choice for engagement rings and anniversary gifts, prized for their bright, white brilliance and timeless versatility. Fancy color diamonds in yellow, pink, green, and blue offer something entirely different: rare, naturally occurring color that makes each stone genuinely unique. Pink diamonds in particular have become increasingly scarce and sought after since the Argyle mine's closure in 2020. Your choice between color and colorless shapes every other decision that follows — budget, metal, shape, and certification. Choosing a Diamond Shape

Diamond shape has a profound effect on the character and presence of a ring. Round cut is the most popular shape worldwide, offering the highest brilliance of any cut and a timeless appeal that works from everyday wear to formal occasions. Cushion cut combines a softly rounded outline with strong brilliance and an antique quality that many buyers find more distinctive than round. Oval cut creates an elongated silhouette that makes the finger appear longer and more slender — it tends to look larger than its carat weight suggests. Pear shape has a unique directional elegance that works beautifully as a solitaire engagement ring. Emerald cut is a step-cut shape with a cooler, more architectural sparkle that suits a modern, minimal aesthetic. The best shape is ultimately the one that resonates most with the person who will wear it.

Choosing the Right Metal

We carry diamond rings in 18K white gold, 18K yellow gold, 18K pink gold, and platinum. For colorless diamonds, white gold and platinum are the natural choice — both allow the stone's brightness to take center stage without competition. Platinum is harder than white gold, holds its finish longer under daily wear, and is the preferred metal for engagement rings intended to be worn every day. For color diamonds, metal choice depends on the stone's hue: yellow diamonds pair beautifully with both platinum and yellow gold; pink diamonds suit rose gold or platinum; green and blue diamonds tend to look most striking in platinum or white gold settings. If in doubt, platinum is always a safe choice — it ages well, is hypoallergenic, and complements every diamond color.

Carat Weight and Budget

Our diamond ring collection starts from around ¥150,000 for elegant eternity ring styles and extends well beyond ¥5,000,000 for rare fancy color center stones. For engagement rings, 0.5ct to 1ct is the most common range in Japan, though the overall appearance of the ring depends far more on the combination of shape, cut quality, color, and clarity than on carat weight alone. A well-cut 0.7ct round diamond in a clean setting can outshine a poorly graded 1ct stone. For color diamond rings, smaller carat weights in vivid grades often carry significant presence — a 0.5ct Fancy Vivid Yellow in an elegant solitaire setting is a striking piece at a more accessible price point. We recommend discussing your budget and priorities with our specialists before deciding on a specific combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what you value most. Colorless diamonds offer timeless, universally appealing brilliance and are the traditional choice for engagement rings. Fancy color diamonds — yellow, pink, green, blue — are rarer, more distinctive, and increasingly sought after as investment pieces. Pink and green diamonds in particular have seen significant increases in value following the Argyle mine's 2020 closure. Both are excellent choices; the right one depends on the wearer's personal style and the occasion.
In Japan, 0.5ct to 1ct is the most commonly chosen range for engagement ring center stones. However, carat weight alone does not determine how impressive a ring looks. The combination of cut quality, color grade, clarity, and shape all contribute to the stone's visual presence. A well-chosen 0.7ct diamond can look larger and more brilliant than a poorly graded 1ct stone. We recommend focusing on overall quality rather than carat weight as the primary criterion.
Rings featuring a prominent center stone — such as solitaires, halos, and three-stone designs — usually come with GIA or CGL certificates. Eternity rings and select multi-stone styles may carry GGS certification. The certificate type is listed on each individual product page. We recommend checking before purchasing.

Platinum is denser and harder than 18K white gold, making it more durable for daily wear over the long term. It is hypoallergenic and does not need rhodium plating to maintain its white appearance. 18K white gold is lighter and initially slightly brighter in appearance, but may need occasional replating over time. For engagement rings worn every day, platinum is generally the preferred choice. For color diamond rings, yellow gold and rose gold can be excellent options depending on the stone's hue.
