How to Choose a Princess Cut Loose Diamond
What Is a Princess Cut Diamond
The princess cut was developed in the 1960s and 1970s and represents one of the most technically sophisticated of all diamond shapes. Its sharp square or near-square outline houses approximately 76 brilliant-cut facets — more than round brilliant cut's 58 — arranged in a way that produces exceptionally strong sparkle from a geometric frame. Unlike step-cut shapes such as emerald, which produce a quieter hall-of-mirrors effect, princess cut delivers fire and brilliance very close to what round cut achieves, while presenting a distinctly modern, architectural profile from above. In loose form, princess cut allows you to assess the stone's exact proportions — how close to square it reads, how uniformly the facets are arranged, and importantly, the condition of the four corners before committing to a setting. Our princess cut loose collection spans colorless and fancy color, with GIA and CGL certification, centered on E color in VS1 and VS2 clarity.
Corner Protection and Setting Considerations
The four sharp corners of a princess cut diamond are the shape's most important practical consideration. Because the corners are acute angles extending to a fine point, they are structurally more vulnerable to chipping than rounded shapes like round, cushion, or oval. This is not a reason to avoid princess cut — it is simply a design requirement for the setting. V-prong settings (also called corner prongs) enclose each corner in a V-shaped metal seat that protects the point while preserving the stone's visibility. Bezel settings offer even more complete protection but enclose more of the stone's perimeter. Both are standard solutions; which to choose depends on aesthetic preference and intended wearing frequency. On color, princess cut can concentrate a slight warmth at the corners, making D through F color the recommended range for white gold or platinum settings. In yellow gold, G through H color reads naturally and offers strong value. Clarity of VS1 to VS2 is recommended for engagement ring center stones.
From Loose Stone to Custom Ring
After selecting a princess cut loose diamond, our craftsmen can create a custom ring built around the stone's specific proportions and your preferred setting style. A V-prong solitaire in platinum is the cleanest expression of the shape's modern geometry. A square halo — with small round or princess cut accent diamonds arranged in a square perimeter around the center stone — amplifies the stone's presence significantly. Three-stone designs with matching princess cut side stones create a strong architectural statement. We work in 18K white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum, and can produce a design sketch before committing to production. Princess cut also works well for fancy color diamond custom orders — yellow princess cut diamonds in yellow gold settings in particular combine the shape's geometric modernity with the warmth of the stone's color to strong effect.
