How to Choose a Pear Cut Loose Diamond
Why Pear Cut for a Custom Piece
The pear cut — sometimes called pear shape or teardrop — is one of the most versatile loose diamond shapes for custom jewelry, performing beautifully across rings, necklaces, and earrings in ways that more symmetrical shapes like round or cushion do not. It combines the 58-facet brilliant structure of round cut with an elongated directional form: one rounded end, one pointed. The result is a shape with strong brilliance, a recognizable silhouette, and a visual elongating effect on whatever it adorns. For rings, pointing the tip toward the fingertip slims and lengthens the finger. For pendants, the shape draws the eye naturally downward and catches light from multiple angles at the neckline. For earrings, matched pear cut stones create a classic, proportioned drop. Our pear cut loose diamonds are graded D and E — the top two colorless grades — with GIA and CGL certification, representing the clearest, most transparent expression of the shape's inherent brilliance.
Symmetry and Proportion — The Two Critical Factors
For pear cut loose diamonds, symmetry is the single most important quality factor — more so than for any other shape in our loose collection. Both halves of the stone must mirror each other precisely along the central axis, from the rounded end to the pointed tip. Even slight asymmetry is immediately visible in a finished piece, disrupting the shape's natural elegance. The symmetry grade on the GIA or CGL certificate is a useful starting point, with Excellent or Very Good recommended for jewelry-quality pear cuts. The length-to-width ratio equally affects how the stone reads: a ratio of 1.50 to 1.75 is generally considered the most balanced and appealing proportion, with lower ratios reading rounder and higher ratios appearing more elongated and dramatic. Viewing the actual stone in person is the most reliable way to assess both symmetry and proportion — photographs rarely capture subtle irregularities that become apparent when you hold the stone directly.
From Loose Stone to Custom Jewelry
After selecting a pear cut loose diamond, we can create a custom piece in your preferred jewelry type and metal. For rings, common settings include a V-prong solitaire (which protects the pointed tip and suits the stone's directional character), halo designs, and three-stone settings. For necklaces, pear cut pendants are typically set in a simple bezel or prong bail, with the rounded end at top and the point facing downward. For earrings, matching pear cut stones in a drop or stud-drop setting create a refined, proportioned look. We work in 18K white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum.
